Google Layoff Hundreds of Jobs in Engineering and Hardware Teams

Google implemented a significant round of job cuts late Wednesday night, affecting several 100 employees across hardware, central engineering, and Google Assistant teams. The move is part of the company's ongoing efforts to streamline operations and prioritize key product initiatives. This follows Google's earlier workforce reduction of 12,000 employees in January, reflecting a strategic shift towards prioritizing developments in artificial intelligence to compete with rivals like Microsoft and Amazon.

Unity Software announced a corporate restructuring plan, leading to a 25% reduction in its workforce, affecting approximately 1,800 employees. The company anticipates incurring associated costs and charges in the first quarter of 2024, following the retirement of former CEO John Riccitiello in October, with James Whitehurst serving as interim CEO.

Discord confirmed a 17% workforce reduction, impacting 170 employees, as part of an efficiency-focused initiative following a hiring surge in 2020. The popular gaming messaging service had previously cut around 40 jobs in August and joins other tech firms like Alphabet, Unity Software, Amazon's Audible, and Trend Micro in announcing layoffs at the beginning of the year. Discord CEO Jason Citron emphasized the necessity of these layoffs in an internal memo.

Amazon is cutting "several hundred" jobs in Prime Video and MGM Studios, as a part of broader restructuring strategy. The decision was announced by Amazon Entertainment Chief Mike Hopkins. The company is reallocating resources to prioritize impactful content and product initiatives, resulting in job cuts, and Twitch is also notifying employees of layoffs affecting approximately 35% or 500 of its workforce.

Surveying 305 U.S. HR professionals, the study highlights challenges, with 45% citing hurdles in adapting to virtual and hybrid work arrangements, including balancing remote work (45%), managing isolation/social interaction (44%), and addressing employee burnout (33%).
