California, Nebraska, Delaware, Maryland, and Hawaii plan to raise minimum wages in 2024

Several U.S. states including California, Nebraska, Delaware, Maryland, and Hawaii, are set to implement minimum wage hikes in 2024. California has a significant increase for fast-food workers, mandating employers like McDonald’s and Chipotle to pay at least $20 per hour to approximately 500,000 workers starting April 1, 2024. This may prompt employers of all sizes to reassess budget allocations, scrutinizing benefits, staffing, and consumer prices.

The U.S. Labor Department reported that the initial jobless claims 217,000 filed for the week ending November 9 decreased by 3,000 compared to the previous week, reaching a total of 220,000 claims. The largest initial claims were in Michigan 2,227, North Carolina 1,303, California 842, Minnesota 767, Iowa 613 and decreased in New York 1,942, Oregon 405, Georgia 348, Florida 302, Ohio 299.

Splunk CEO Gary Steele announced a 7% global workforce reduction, affecting around 500 employees. CEO stated that the layoffs are not related to the $28 billion Cisco deal. Majority of the laid-off employees are located in the U.S. 

 

Google HR representative reveals that the average Google employee works beyond a standard 9-to-5 day and stated that most salaried Googlers already exceed 8-hour workdays on days they are working. The memo surfaced after viral claims of one-hour workdays, and it indicates that compressed schedules, even at 100%, may not be realistic, while also highlighting the option for employees to apply for reduced schedules at 60% or 80% of full-time.

To streamline decision-making and reduce costs, Snap has announced the layoff of around 20 product management employees. This decision comes after Snap's Q3 earnings report, revealing a 5% YoY growth in overall sales to $1.19 billion, surpassing analyst predictions.
